AFRICA DAY CELEBRATION

This is a day that is celebrated continental by all the countries in the continent of Africa on the 25th May of every year. In some countries such as Ghana, Lesotho, Zambia, Mali, Namibia and Zimbabwe this day is regarded as a public holiday while in all the other countries it is celebrated but not regarded as a public holiday.

Asked about this day, members of the community had a lot to say about wat this day is and what it means to them. Sbongile Nyembe, a chef at Blessings Social Development Centre said that Africa day to her means that working together as Africans and be united. "every in the world where there are Africans, they should know each other and be united”, Nyembe said. Mr Mnisi, a teacher at Buhlebemfundo secondary school in Tsakane said Africa day to him means celebrating African culture and tradition. He also said that it means celebrating their Africanism,

“Africa day to me means celebrating the diversity of African continent as a whole”, said Miss Shumani who is also a teacher at Buhlebemfundo secondary school. She also said that it means celebrating who she is and where she comes from and understanding the culture and tradition of Africa. Nkululeko Mdhluli, a learner at Buhlebemfundo secondary school says to him Africa day means uniting as Africans and celebrate this day. “this was the day where all Africans united so we all have to unite in this day, do juts the SADC countries but all the contries in Africa” said Mdhluli.


It shows that some of South Africans understand the meaning of Africa day and they know what they have to do in order to keep the spirit of being an African. They understand that as Africans they should unite and shoe love to one another where ever they are and whenever not just on this day but every day.
